It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of one of our long-standing Life members, Dr. Clarence Madhosingh

Dr. Clarence Madhosingh passed away at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus) five days after his 90th birthday while surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Trinidad & Tobago, Dr. Madhosingh graduated from Naparima College in 1950 and obtained a diploma from the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in 1953.
Upon immigrating to Canada, he was awarded an MSc from the University of British Columbia (1956) followed by a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario (1959).

During his 36-year career as a senior research scientist with Canada' s federal Department of Agriculture, Dr. Madhosingh published over ninety scientific papers and was an editor of the Canadian Journal of Microbiology.
He was an executive member of the Biological Council of Canada, a member of the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada, a National Coordinator for Biotechnology and Bioresources Canada, and a Scientific Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Agriculture.
One of his most memorable professional experiences was a year-long sabbatical at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, while his career ended with a teaching cross-appointment at the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Madhosingh is fondly remembered by son Dennis, former wife Ann Marie, and many dozens of immediate and extended family members, friends, PSWs, and former professional colleagues. He enjoyed life to the fullest through travel, writing, entertaining and cooking, and his good company and good humour will be missed.

Dr. Madhosingh has been cremated in Ottawa and at his request there will be no funeral service.

From: NAAC Executive Members
Dear Members,
We have you all in our thoughts and trust you are virus-free and signing up to get your vaccinations as soon as they are available.

Like all non-profit organizations, fundraising is at a standstill and so NAAC has kept expenditures to a minimum. Our last fundraising event was the Christmas Dance in December 2019 when we made a profit of $3,723. Since the start of COVID-19 NAAC has not awarded bursaries to the schools in Trinidad, but did meet our commitment of 2 bursaries to West Humber Collegiate in the amount of $500 each. Our two regular monthly expenditures is for a storage unit for our archives, drumsets and steelpans and for hosting our naactoronto.ca website.

NAAC's assets as at March 2021:
Bank Account $12,132.00
Investment Portfolio (Book Value) plus cash dividends in the amount of $44,968.

Due to the ever-changing situation with COVID-19 and its many variants, the NAAC Executive has decided to again forgo holding an Annual General Meeting this year.
The present Executive agreed to take the same common-sense approach as we did last year, whereby all serving members have agreed to continue in their positions for the 2021-2022 year.

Our trust has to be placed in support for the vaccine program and the best advice from our scientists.

From Joy Sammy

Death Announcement

James Julian Valmiki Sammy

October 30, 1970 - March 17, 2021

Julian Sammy, son, nephew, uncle, brother, brother-in-law, father, husband and friend passed away on the night of March 17th at the age of 50.

Julian was also a debater, critical thinker, scientist, DnD Master, creator of music and word, and traveller. He is survived by his wife Kathleen Barret, daughter Live and her mothers, Anita Wiklem and Holly Liddell, mother Kathy (Inglis) Sammy, sister Joy Sammy, brother in law Hugo Bohroquez, and nephew Mateo.

Predeceased by his father Howard Sammy (2010), uncles Rex (Denise) Inglis (2000) and Jack (Irene) (2018) Inglis, and Donald (Chris) Sammy (2020). He had a 6 year relationship with cancer.

I won't call it a battle because he did not approach it that way. He was well aware of all the potential outcomes of his situation and knew that he could leave us quickly and did not have much time left.

His passing was at home, was quick and his incredible life partner Kathleen was by his side.

He will be missed and remembered by the Barret, Beaulieu, Svenning, Inglis, Sammy and Sabzali families in the USA, Canada, Norway and Trinidad.

He asked all of you to do good deeds and I will emphasize that here. We each have the power to make someone else's day better be it a stranger or someone close to us. Julian can still make the lives of others better through us...so let's do that. There will be more news to come on services arrangements and donations can be made to The Sunnybrook Foundation at https://sunnybrook.ca/foundation/
